How to play German Whist

German Whist is played with a standard 52‑card deck and unfolds over two distinct phases. The beauty of the game is that Phase 1 feels like drafting the perfect hand, while Phase 2 turns every card into a high‑stakes decision.

Phase 1 – Build the best hand

  • The top card of the stock is flipped face‑up and becomes the prize for the next trick.
  • You and your opponent play tricks, following suit when possible. Trumps beat all side suits, and the Ace is always high.
  • The winner of the trick claims the face‑up stock card, while the loser draws blind from the top of the stock.
  • Every decision matters: do you fight for that Ace of trumps, or let it go to keep your long‑term strategy hidden?

Phase 2 – Every trick counts

  • Once the stock is exhausted, hands are locked in and Phase 2 begins.
  • You and your opponent now play out all 13 tricks with the hands you built.
  • Each trick in Phase 2 counts toward your score; Phase 1 tricks never score directly.
  • Win more tricks than your opponent and you pocket the difference as match points. First to 21 wins the match.

Three difficulty levels — from relaxed to ruthless

Whether you are learning the ropes or chasing a genuine mental workout, German Whist Elite scales with you.

Easy

Easy mode plays casually, ideal for learning the rules, exploring the flow of the two phases, and enjoying the casino table without pressure.

Medium

Medium mode uses smart heuristics, always making solid, sensible plays that put up a real fight while staying predictable enough to study and improve against.

Hard

Hard mode is a different beast entirely. A full minimax engine with alpha‑beta pruning takes over in Phase 2, playing with perfect information and near‑flawless strategy that punishes every mistake.

Complete German Whist rules — no shortcuts

Under the hood, German Whist Elite faithfully implements the complete rules of the classic game, with no shortcuts or simplified variants.

  • Full suit‑following rules enforced every trick.
  • Trumps beat side suits, with the trump suit fixed by the initial face‑up card.
  • Ace is always high. No alternate ranking, no special wild cards.
  • Phase 1 tricks never score — they only shape the hands you carry into Phase 2.
  • Phase 2 tricks alone decide the winner, with match points awarded by trick difference.

The result is a fast, elegant, and deeply strategic two‑player card game that feels at home both in a teaching setting and in serious head‑to‑head play.
